As a first step in this process, we are establishing the NHS Finance Leaders National Talent Pool.

NHS FINANCE LEADERS NATIONAL TALENT POOL

Developing future finance leaders has been identified as a key priority in the FFF work plan. Working with HFMA, the National Talent Pool was established in 2017 to support aspiring finance leaders to become Finance Directors and Chief Finance Officers.

Applications are now open for the 2018 cohort of the NHS Aspiring Finance Leaders National Talent Pool.

Click here to fill in the online application form and send an up to date CV to lily.chapman@hfma.org.uk. You can save and come back to the form once you have started. Please make sure you download and read the Director of Finance & Chief Finance Officer capabilitites document on the right hand side of this page before completing your application. Applications will close on 12th February 2018. For queries about the talent pool, please contact Lily by email on lily.chapman@hfma.org.uk or by phone on 0117 938 8320.

Following an application and interview process, successful candidates will be enrolled onto the talent pool and have access to the following development opportunities:

  • Two-day development centre to assess readiness for DOF/CFO roles
  • Support to produce personal development plans
  • One-on-One coaching
  • Four regional action learning sets
  • Two National masterclasses
  • Top table discussions with NHS Finance leaders

The talent pool is aimed at individuals currently working at Deputy Director level or equivalent who aspire to be finance leaders now or in the very near future. The aim is to create a diverse pool of talent that improves the number and quality of applicants for future finance leadership vacancies.

Regional Talent Pool Applicants Workshops

HFMA are running talent pool applicant workshops across England where you have the unique opportunity to hear from a current talent pool participant and get hints and tips for applying and getting the most out of the pool. You will also hear from one of the talent pool assessors from last year's application process to make sure your application stands out. Finally, the day will end with a CV and interview skills workshop from Bill Brace who has a wealth of experience head hunting and recruiting into director posts. Workshops are taking place in Birmingham, London, Manchester and Crawley over January.

Aspiring Finance Leaders Steering Group

Chaired by Bob Alexander (Executive Director of Resources, NHS Improvement) and led by Cathy Kennedy, the steering group has representation from provider and commissioner organisations, NHSI, NHSE, the Leadership Academy and the Skills Development Network. The group are the driving force behind the development of a national talent pool of individuals who are ready to apply for director of finance positions now or in the very near future, and 4 regional networks for individuals who aspire to hold a director of finance position within the next 3 years.

Characteristics of a Finance Leader

FFF have worked with Prospect to produce a set of characteristics of a finance leader. These characteristics have been shared and consultation has been held with different groups, including networks of Chief Executives and Audit Committee Chairs.

These characteristics could be used by individuals to assess their readiness to apply to join the talent pool or to highlight areas where they need to develop in order to join the talent pool in future years. Download the report to find out more about the characteristics.
