FFF Plans for 2018/19

2017/18 was a busy year for Future-Focused Finance, with lots more planned for 2018/19 – for the latest news check out our website www.futurefocusedfinance.nhs.uk.   Here are the highlights relating to our 6 action areas:

Best Possible Value: With the Decision Effectiveness tool developed and launched, Best Possible Value is   currently supporting interested parties to implement the toolkit within their organisations. With training to develop BPV Specialists, this will help more organisations to use the tool.

Efficient Processes and Systems: Model processes for the transactional areas, ‘Procure to Pay’ & ‘Hire to Retire’ are available on the website, along with a web-based system maturity toolkit. The reconstituted delivery group is now turning its attention to intra-NHS transactions, particularly non-contracted activity (NCAs) and e-invoicing, in an attempt to highlight further efficiencies.

Close Partnering is focusing on 3 key areas going forward; Primary Care, Engagement (including the QSIR Programme) and developing the FACE network to help demystify finance. Developing and sharing resources from presentations to posters and animations, the action area is helping finance and clinicians work together across professional boundaries in these increasingly challenging times. Skills and Strengths: This area has developed and launched the 4 Strengths of a finance professional, currently being rolled out across organisations. Work is underway with Health Education England to develop on an online e-learning portal.


Great Place to Work: 2018 will see the second cohort of the NHS Finance Leaders National Talent Pool, 4 Regional Networks have also been launched for aspiring finance leaders who will be ready for the Talent Pool in the next few years.   Both the Talent Pool and the Networks aim to develop a diverse pool of talent for future finance leader vacancies. The action area has also seen great interest in the FFF Accreditation process which allows the Finance Leadership Council (FLC) to give due recognition to those NHS organisations that have the very best finance skills development culture and practices in place.  If your organisation is ready to be accredited please email the Future-Focused Finance team Futurefocusedfinance@nhs.net.  GPtW is also continuing its work on diversity taking positive steps to address issues of diversity and inclusion in NHS Finance teams.  For more information on our work in this area including our sponsorship programme please visit the website.


Foundations for Sustained Improvement: In 2018 we will continue to work on improving our website and our communications more generally. We will send out regular newsletters highlighting key pieces of work. We will also develop our growing regional Value Maker network and ensure that all of our fantastic volunteers are fully supported. The programme that we ran with LSBU in 2017 on working effectively in networks will underpin this development.
