EVO (Engagement Value Outcome)

HFMA’s Healthcare Costing for Value Institute and Future Focused Finance are partnering to deliver a new framework for NHS provider trusts.

Trained facilitators work with a core group of individuals at specialty/service level over the course of a few months.

The aim is to improve NHS professionals’ understanding of patient-level information and costing (PLICS) data, so that they start using it on a regular basis to support improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of how patient care is delivered.

EVO uses PLICS data for a specific specialty/service line and identifies staff key to this area from different disciplines who could benefit from using this data. By engaging these different disciplines, EVO naturally encourages the participants to work together to interpret the available data and identify opportunities to reduce unwarranted variation and drive improvements.

It is important to note that EVO should not be seen as ‘another initiative’ but rather an enabler to support what services are already doing, for example quality improvement projects, service redesign, GIRFT, pathway reviews, business cases, Model Hospital. PLICS is a rich information source which can help specialties/services to ensure that the resources they have are used in the most effective way possible to provide high quality care to all patients/service users.

EVO works with three specialties/services at each trust and once completed the framework equips the trust with the necessary tools for self-implementation. Further implementation is strongly encouraged and is publicly rewarded through an accreditation system ensuring EVO’s longevity in the trust and across England. Case studies ensure that the good practice generated from the framework is shared with others in the trust and nationally.

EVO can be delivered at any NHS trust who has implemented PLICS in any sector. It is currently being piloted at two acute trusts, one mental health trust and one community trust.

  • University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
  • Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust

Pending a successful pilot and external review we hope to launch EVO in 2020.
